Oddly, I only shot 103 images today on this camera with the almost permanently mounted 35mm lens. (Don't worry, I shot 900 images on the other camera with a couple other lenses) 😂
First shot of the day features Mayor Sharie Minions of Port Alberni on ye olde conference zoom. Still got a blinky shot out the gate. 😂 Pretty stoked on how centered and level this is for a quick test shot really. Off to a good start.
On stage is Marissa Lawrence, CANDO, Chief Ken Watts, Tseshaht First Nation and Chief Brandy Lauder, Hupacasath First Nation. Honored to be in the same room with these people.
Last shot of the day is on a community tour with the Tsawout (say-out) First Nation. They welcomed us warmly, and the young tour guide on the bus regaled us with stories with such passion for language and culture it was intoxicating.

FIRST SHOT / LAST SHOT
Thought it might be fun to share my literal first shot and last shot from a day shooting the #CANDO conference.
First shot feeling out the place.. how close will they let me get? Maybe a little risky on the shutter speed! Meh. Risk it for the magic. Not a select, but it's a good start. =)
Last shot - a quiet moment at the end of the Icebreaker reception with @stan_wesley in the Big House display inside the Royal Museum. A familiar face, a great space, and a damn fine hat. Connection, context, composition. Checkity-check. That's a wrap.

The carbon weave, the chosen materials, the textures, the edges, the hardware, details that matter to those that get this deep into an inline skate, or really, any product at a high level.
For the Wizard boots, the goal was to really show the quality of the materials and workmanship. Crisp, clean macro photography on black, with controlled lighting that lets the textures and technical aesthetic do the talking.

...and frankly, a necessary amount of attention paid to these fine specimens.

For this series of cannabis edibles, the goal was to make the products feel as fun and colourful as they are in real life, but with a little more graphic impact.
We built this campaign around organized layouts of the products then used hard light and long shadows to give the images a sense of depth and reality, especially apparent in the translucent candies.
The shadows help keep the compositions from feeling flat, while the bright colours do most of the talking.
It all looks so simple and clean, and it's a great lesson in how thoughtful lighting and a strong visual concept can make a big difference in how your products show up.
Plus, it's the kind of shoot where you have to work work work to hit flow state and the ideas just start pouring out through process. Holla if you're an artist and this resonates with you.
It's honest work. No one sees this part.

There's a really cool side-effect creation that happened when I timelapsed myself doing this work today... The slowed down (think: "plantlike") graphics that appear on the installed screens for the show "Biophilia" at the @nanaimoartgallery are sped up again - an artifact of human inquiry and interaction with plants, and time.
So, when I'm busy and you don't see me posting it's cause I'm shooting upcoming products and it's so darn exciting, and you gotta let the work do the work when it's time. Shiny things!

Bottle photography has been a continuous challenge and reward for 15+ years! There is no "one setup" for all, unless you just don't give a shit. Besides, it's fun to solve problems and create something unique, like what's in the bottle.
Brackish Waters is the third of three projects to engage the resource industries of Vancouver Island (mining, forestry and fishing) through contemporary art and writing.
A number of my installation photos from exhibits at @nanaimoartgallery are included.
Also, accompanying the special release of this book, is a "spoken word" 10" vinyl of Snuneymuxw siem sulxwe:n Xulsi'malt - respected Elder Gary Manson that regales me with a story in both Hul'q'umi'num and English.
Lovely project to be a part of. Always something incredibly special about print.

When the bottle is the centre of the design: you need really, really good bottle images. We do this.
Also a nod to the important "expressions" of each whisky, one being it's colour - it would be a shame to fake it at this point - so each is meticulously captured under the same conditions to represent the real deal. It's a lot of work, but so is making whisky, and if you care, they'll care too.
Photographing a LOT of pet memorial products for a Vancouver Island company. Some e-comm, some video.. a lot of careful planning to be efficient and effective, even for what sometimes appears as simple. Thanks to my assistant & stylist @carnivorissa for keeping us on track!
From test shots to finals - @trakkayaks brought the adventure as we captured a few kayak models from the beautiful frame and accessories to the tough exterior only found on this one of a kind packable kayak.
The adventure on my end was moving my studio gear to a larger rented space due to the products' size, rigging them to "float" on set, and still shooting them with enough precision to do some rollover/reveal action on their new website. Do check it out, it turned out flawless.
