Last Saturday, April 04th, I was invited to photograph the
official launch of the major expansion and construction project at
Nanaimo Airport.
Special guests included Premier Gordon Campbell, Nanaimo-Parksville MLA Ron Cantelon, chair of the Island Coastal Economic Trust Barry Janyk and our new Mayor John Ruttan, among many, many others. I even saw Mayor Gerry Furney of Port McNeill - I hadn't seen him since I lived there shortly a few years back! He's been mayor there for over 30 years! Wow.

Noting the turnout of dignitaries from so many regions, I can tell this is a significant step not only for Nanaimo, but for the majority of the island, let's say, from the Malahat and north... for tourism, for trades, for education (VIU)... this project seems to be welcomed with open arms.
I was lucky enough to have access to the event space early and set myself up a little 'photographic advantage'. A couple flashes stashed up in the ceiling for some extra light would help set my images apart from the run-and-gun press photogs. No need to run when you're one step ahead anyways!
Security also provided me with a reflective vest and clearance to the tarmac for a few shots around the airport before the event started (try THAT at YVR!)... all in all.. an interesting and successful day.
